Mobile Phlebotomy
A mobile phlebotomy system can eliminate patient and specimen identification errors which can lead to incorrect diagnoses, unnecessary treatment and extra work for staff. In recent years, hospital labs have also begun utilizing barcode technology to address the pre-analytic stage of the testing process to ensure that specimens are collected from the right patient, in the right tube, at the right time.
"One of the most significant patient safety improvements was implementing the MobiLab solution," explains Nancy Smith, Director of Nursing, Howard County General Hospital, Columbia, MD. "Before mobile phlebotomy we had 20 - 25 mislabeled specimens per month and now we have 0 to 1 per month. If there is a mislabel, it's due to not using mobile phlebotomy and is human error."
MobiLab links a barcode on the patient's wristband with the current test orders in the laboratory computer system (LIS). The approach emphasizes positive patient identification (POPT) and point of care label printing to significantly reduce patient identification and specimen labeling errors, while improving productivity for phlebotomists and in the lab.
MobiLab is a tool that can help improve patient safety at your hospital. It brings positive patient identification, positive specimen identification and specimen label printing to the bedside.
